Good hygiene is important when milk replacer is used.
Because of the large litter sizes, bowls are used to give the piglets milk replacers. To keep the bacterial contamination in the bowls as low as possible they have to be cleaned thoroughly during the first few days.
The daily removal of sow faeces, washing the sows prior to moving them into the farrowing house, and using detergents when cleaning the farrowing rooms can reduce the number of pathogens in the pen. However a complete elimination of E. coli and clostridia is not possible.
